Roche Supports Relief Efforts Across The Country In The Wake Of The August 4th Explosion in Beirut

Following the tragic explosion that occured in Beirut on August 4, 2020, and in light of the massive destruction that affected the city, leaving more than 300,000 people homeless, more than 6,000 injured and overwhelming major healthcare institutions, Roche donated and supported relief efforts across the country.

As a sign of commitment to Lebanon, its employees, and the community in general, the company made sure that no one was left behind without assistance and distributed a broad spectrum of donations: life-saving medications, the replacement of diagnostic laboratory equipment, the rehabilitation of severely impacted healthcare institutions, and monetary donations to the International Committee of the Red Cross, cancer funds, and local NGOs. The local Roche team was also present on the ground to lend a helping hand to the families impacted by the devastating blast that severely damaged their homes.

“As a healthcare company, we commit to building stronger and healthier communities by improving human services and support systems, especially for those who need them most. In reponse to the devastating Beirut blast, we were able to quickly mobilize our efforts and work with local authorities and partners who share our belief in the urgency of providing essential healthcare infrastructure and resources in Lebanon” said Hesham Sabry, Head of Roche Pharmaceuticals, Levant Sub-Area.

“Despite the circumstances that the country is facing, we are committed to remaining a reliable partner that will continuously aim to bring true relief to our patients and healthcare professionals at all times. During this difficult situation, we would like to reiterate our cooperative and aiding stance to all our stakeholders; confident that these turbulent waves will supersede. Together we are stronger, and together we can!" added Halit Toktas, Head of Diabetes Care Levant, North & Francophone Africa

“Now that the initial shock has passed, we can clearly assess the damage and pressure on healthcare providers. At Roche, we remain dedicated in supporting our partners and remaining close to them at a time when they need us the most. We hope that this donation is the first step towards rebuilding what has been destroyed and in achieving our shared mission in serving the patients of Lebanon” mentioned Issam Khneisser, Head of Roche Diagnostics, Lebanon.

Roche reaffirms its belief in the strength of the Lebanese people that showed immense care for each other after the tragedy by providing shelter for the homeless, hot meals for the hungry, and medical care for the injured. This sense of community is something to be admired and preserved to create a better tomorrow. Roche is committed to continue supporting the healthcare system, no matter the circumstances by taking part in initiatives that aim to address local needs in a sustainable way and will continue to stand in solidarity with the healthcare heroes that have provided relief and support to Lebanon.
